Hawa Mahal Jaipur

Located in Badi Choupad in the ‘Pink City’ Jaipur, Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. An interesting fact is that Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh was deeply inspired by the architecture of Khetri Mahal in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, which led to the creation of Hawa Mahal.

Designed by Lal Chand Ustad as an addition to the City Palace, Hawa Mahal served as the women’s quarters, or zenana, and adhered to the strict Purdah rule of those days. The 953 windows allowed Royal Rajput women to observe daily events and celebrations on the street below without being seen.
