Red Fort Delhi

One of the popular tourist attractions in Delhi, Red Fort is a massive architecture built by the Mughals. Considered the largest monument in Delhi, this prominent construction is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts flocks of foreign as well as domestic tourists every year. Red Fort, which is definitely the must-visit place in Delhi, covers a total area of around 254.67 acres.

It took around 10 years to complete Red Fort; the construction was commissioned in 1638 when Delhi was under the rule of Emperor Shah Jahan and he decided to shift his capital Agra to Delhi. The main architect was Ustad Ahmad Lahori and the construction ended in 1648. Being an important part of the Delhi sightseeing tour, Red Fort never fails to amaze its visitors.

The massive enclosing walls made of red sandstone surround several famous tourist spots like Lahore Gate, Delhi Gate, Nahr-i-Behisht, Moti Masjid, water canals, fountains and many more. Showcasing the height of Mughal brilliance, Red Fort is the witness of assorted historical events. Among which, it is worth mentioning that, on August 15, 1947, India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian flag above the Lahori Gate as a gesture of freedom. Moreover, one of the interesting facts about Red Fort is that on the eve of India’s Independence Day, every year on August 15, the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag at the Red Fort’s main gate and addresses the people of the nation.
